Ikat Skirt

I have yet to find a good a-line skirt pattern. I have flipped through the skirt sections of the books at the fabric store countless times, never finding one that’s quite right. I did, however, find a skirt at a thrift store a few weeks ago that has the right shape (and fits!) so I decided to trace it to make my own pattern.

The only issue I had was that the skirt ended up being too tight in the hips. I’m not sure what happened, because I made sure to add for seam allowances, but it definitely ended up smaller than the original skirt I traced. After letting out both side seams as much as I could, I still had to add a panel to the side opposite the zipper. I actually think it’s kind of cute, but I made a note on my pattern piece to add a few extra inches next time.

I used a white sheet as an underlining, and sewed the pieces right sides together first for easy side seam and waistband finishing. I love this finish, and will definitely use it on skirts in the future!

I also tried out a double needle for the first time on the hem of this skirt. It looks totally professional, and is so easy! I was always curious about how to use double needles, especially since my machine used to have two spindles (one of them got broken off at some point), but I couldn’t figure out how you would thread the machine until I saw this tutorial and had to give it a go.

I love how this turned out! Yay for cool summer outfits!

  1. I love this skirt, so much fun. Unless you pointed out the extra panel I would have never noticed it. You did a great job.~Amanda, creatingamongstboys.blogspot.com
